The "Art at St. María's" exhibition tries to boost St. María's gothic church, taking advantage of the interest the monument has by itself, enriching it with a permanent show of Catalan art on the topic of The Virgin, in tuning with the place where is located.
Therefore, in the different lateral chapels of the church have been disposed original, copies and reproductions of Catalan paintings of the different styles and eras: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and XVIIIth, XIXth, XXth centuries, leaving some space to let the new generations add works of their own time, the XXIst century. This exhibition will be enriched with copies of images about the Virgin, choosing the dedications that have more reputation in the Catalan speaking lands.
By using copies and reproductions we can present representative works of each era, that otherwise would be impossible to obtain. Nevertheless this, there are original, works of the last centuries that could be found in the antiquarians' market or in other cases gifts and purchases of works of contemporary artists.
This exposition intends to divulge, to approximate the art, to put it within reach of everybody. Art in St. María wants to be as a great history book of the art in which are shown the great works of all the times on the chosen topic of The Virgin, reproduced in its real dimensions . A unique book, in a live space.
The content of the pictorial sample is of a total of 65 works distributed between the fifteen lateral chapels and spaces of the church of St. María's. The chosen works are the most representative of the Catalan art on the topic of the Virgin. Their distribution by centuries and styles permits to make a chronological and evolutionary follow-up of the Catalan painting from the Xth century (Preromanesque) until the XXth century.
